Taking My Job With Me
This week I noticed a girl at the orphanage who has a very bad lisp. I debated whether or not I should attempt to help this girl correct her lisp since my Spanish is so poor. I wondered if I would be able to help her at all. Today I mentioned to Emily (the permanent volunteer that helped us get into the orphanage) that I do speech therapy in the United States. She was thrilled and asked if I could help another child as well. She said there aren't any speech therapists in Peru! I told her there was no way I could treat kids with language problems (seeing as how I have a language problem as well in Spanish), but that I could probably help kids with articulation problems (i.e., pronunciation problems, such as a lisp). I will only be at the orphanage another month, so I don't have much time, but I will be working with this one girl every day, and probably more children as well, so hopefully I can help a little bit! The goal for this weekend is to figure out how I'm going to teach correct pronunciation of 's' in Spanish!

That's wonderful! It's so great that you can put to use your hard-earned skills in unexpected ways. You never know when you might be needed. And good luck trying to do it in Spanish, but I'm sure you'll do a fantastic job, with maybe a lot of gesticulation and drawings :)
ReplyDeleteWow! That is awesome Shara!
